Egg Donation Q & A

Who needs egg donation?

Many people require egg donation to add to their family, with a few common examples being:

  • Women who were born without eggs
  • Women with poor-quality eggs as a result of cancer treatments
  • Women with chromosomal egg problems
  • Women who experienced premature menopause
  • Women with age-related infertility
  • Same-sex couples without access to eggs

Regardless of why they need egg donation, people who rely on donated eggs view them as a tremendous gift.

How old do I have to be for egg donation?

Fertility Center of Orlando welcomes egg donors at 21-31 years of age. This is the age range in which your eggs are of the highest quality, which means the couples who receive your eggs have the highest chance of successful conception.

Along with the age requirement, you must undergo a psychological screening, background check, genetic screening, drug test, and communicable disease screening.

What does egg donation involve?

You'll join a list of donors at the Fertility Center of Orlando. Your name will remain anonymous, but some basic characteristics like your race, height, weight, and donation history help prospective parents (the recipients) choose the right donor for them.

After a recipient chooses you, the egg donation process starts. You’ll undergo fertility-stimulating treatments to encourage maximum egg production, which involves about two weeks of daily injections. Then, you’ll come to the Fertility Center of Orlando for your egg retrieval procedure.

From the time that a recipient chooses you as their donor to your egg retrieval procedure can take about 4-6 weeks.

What happens after egg donation?

Within two weeks, you’ll typically have a menstrual period. By your next period, you’ll be back on your normal schedule. Two weeks after your egg retrieval procedure, you’ll come in for a follow-up exam.

How many times can I donate eggs?

The Fertility Center of Orlando follows the guidelines issued by the American Society of Medicine, which stipulate a maximum of six donations in total during your lifetime. Many women choose to donate eggs more than once.

Can I keep any of my egg donations for personal use?

Qualified candidates who have donated at least once previously can opt for a fertility preservation procedure. In an elective egg freezing cycle with shared donation, you’ll share the eggs but also freeze some for personal use.
